Spacecraft sticker sheet invite 2008! Really happy about being invited to take part in this project. Spacecraft is putting out another artist sticker sheet with 35-40 peoples work on individual stickers in a poster format.

If you live in Seattle or the out lying areas you might have noticed the space craft "snow cat" stickers just about everywhere. They like stickers for sure. I will have more details later about the sticker showing and designs.

The High school students and people at Link where cool, in fact most of the volunteer folks where kids that where once in the program themselves. The Link program is a great grass roots program that deserves more attention for the work they do. The students that stay in the monthly programs participate in an end of the year art show at Cornish, which also qualifies them for scholarships at art schools. The link is also partly funded by the Seattle AIGA chapter. Terry Marks from tmarks design was also participating in the event, which was fun to meet. That really was a great time. Thanks Link and students.

I will be doing a talk this Saturday, 16th 9:00 AM at Cornish school of design on behalf of a non-profit, The Link Program. The Link Program helps bring art education and resources to high school kids wanting to get into art college. The topic of this Saturdays talk will be about skateboard design. They asked me to chat about what it means to be a graphic designer and how I got into it.
Really excited about this one. The Link bought a bunch of blank skateboard decks for the kids to draw, paint, and generally get crazy with. Should be fun. Photos soon.

Todd Bratrud

Hey Everybody,
Damn, Europe was a great time. Having Jet lag was tough last week. I will be posting some photos later to share. But until then to keep your interest, check out this video with illustrator/artist Todd Bratrud. You may recognize some of his work from Consolidated skateboards where he was the art director/illustrator. That is where I was first introduced to his style.
Volcom did a video interview with Todd Bratrud, in support of his upcoming worldwide art show tour.

Also check out Burlesque of North America, a collective of artist/designers he works with.

Off to Germany and Italy

Off to Germany and Italy for the next 10 days. Going with One Ball Jay to help out with the ESPO trade show and see some sights. Munich, Germany for the trade show. Then Italy for some sight seeing. Never been to Europe. Very excited!

2x2: Seattle Street Art

Happy New Year! 2008 is starting off great.

I am participating in a group art show 2x2: Seattle Street Art. The show is opening this Friday the 11th 8-11 at The Anne Bonny (Spencer Moody's of the Murder City Devils thrift store).

My piece is a concept painting and drawings of a Rat that got into our house and was partying on our dime for about a month! Funny story, come to the show I will tell you all about it.

One Ball Jay catalog session

Just got back from a serious catalog session with Matt at One Ball Jay. This is how the conversation went Friday night at 5:30 PM.
“Ring-Ring, hey Shawn, Matt here at One Ball. Can you come down to my house and help me crank out our winter 07-08 catalog by Monday afternoon, sorry for the late notice!?”

Yup, that’s how it went down. 35 hours, 68 pages later in 2.5 days we finished business! This was my second One Ball Jay catalog in the past few years. They do what they want! One Ball Jay is great, founded by Matt as a surf wax project as a teenager. Then he figured out how to make the first snowboard wax at the dawn of the snowboard age. A true DIY’er! ECO LINE

Just finished up a logo for ECO LINE Painting and Home Project Management.
I am feeling pretty darn happy with the end result of this one.

ECO LINE is a new company formed by some friends of mine with green-minded painting and building sense. Located in Ballard, they wanted the design of the logo to look industrial to celebrate the blue collar Ballard pride with a hint of green leaf to show the ECO friendly company minded goals. The future is looking good! I will be working on a full package for this company next.

Capita Snowboards First Kiss

Capita Snowboards put out their first full length DVD, First Kiss.
Inside the packaging is a book titled, Capita Super Corporation; Corporate Handbook. Filled with little art sections done by various artist, designers, photographers, and people communicating random thoughts. Blue asked me if I would do a page and I was happy to do it. Capita is a great free thinking, independent, and progressive company.

As a funny joke my lady got me a pack of nudy girls playing cards a while ago. I thought it would be interesting to take a few choice ones to a copy machine and get crazy with the halftones. This one in particular had a really strong glare after I played with the darkness/lightness functions on the photocopy machine. A while back I had some bug designs I was doing for a shirt for Marginal Way. These little creepy crawlers where meant to be on this I think. A large screen print would be ideal one day. Maybe?

Dirty Thumbnails!

Started a new project with a green painting company a few weeks ago. I will be doing the whole identity system and the frontend graphics for the website, yeah! Which brings me to the above photo of my thumbnails for the logo. Saved a bunch of time drawing on and off for a few days then showing them to the green painting people. Right off the start they liked some, didn’t like others. That started a conversation of more green ideas. Way less of a headache then spending time on the machine (computer) with ideas that wouldn’t float. Next week I will post a few of the logos I am working with. It’s looking good so far.

DAYBREAK

Heck yeah, a new comic from one of my favorites Brian Ralph! DAYBREAK is another fine addition to the mini comics and books put out by him. Brian Ralph skips no detail when it comes to the little stuff that makes his books rad. Limited spot colors, heavy stock cover paper, and crisp hand inked lines make the total package complete. Check out Bodega Distribution to see more of the fine comic artists they distribute.

SODO DIY

A few months back when I set up a new skateboard deck I always try to put something on the grip to make it my own. Our park, Marginal Way is located in the industrial part of Seattle know as the SODO District. Here is a link to the origin of the word "DIY" if you don't know.

Bold type and lighting bolt, fits the area I think. It's fun making stencils, bring them to the park, and letting your buds put them on their boards also. I sprayed the stencil on a wooded ramp at our park and some kid wrote under it, "CD DIY". Maybe something is happening there too?

Rose and skull, Wedding Invitations

Our friends Dawn and Todd are pretty cool people with some funny ideas on how to get hitched. Todd is the owner of Zero Zero Hair on Capital Hill. Every year they have some pretty crazy Halloween party’s so I wanted to help them out with this. Plus it’s not everyday that you can draw some bloody roses and skulls for a wedding invitation.
Originally they had plans to get them screen printed at my neighborhood screen printer, D and L but they where on a budget and time constrictions. So we went the easier path and had them printed at Stinko’s for a fair price.

I like the Internet for photo reference, definitely a big fan of hunting down cool books. But for a spot drawing the Internet is rad. First loose sketch, tracing paper, tracing paper, more tracing, and some beer (it was a Saturday people, seriously). A little back and forth with Dawn on the copy and there you have it. Not a bad way to doing something cool for some friends.

I heart zines and Field Notes

I like zines. Aaron Draplin down in Portland at DDC just sent me his side project, Field Notes. Field Notes are little books to jot down thoughts, doodles, grocery lists, or what not. I personally like the size and the feeling of the books. Plus they have some use full info, like a ruler printed on the back inside cover. Draw something.

The Fun House Presents: Marginal Way Skatepark Weekend Benefit + Mini Ramp Jam.

I finished this poster last week for our local Seattle D.I.Y. project, Marginal Way Skatepark. Since the birth of our park I have taken on the role of working on the promotional stuff for the events. Posters, handbills, tee graphics, stickers, banners, web images, etc. which is cool cause it has given me a chance to experiment with different styles of illustration and also to work on something that I truly can stand behind. It's all for the love of doing something fun to break up the daily routines.

So part of my blog is to let people know how I got to the end result, cause sometimes the best stuff is the middle. I got some inspiration from hanging out with my bud Dan. He and his lady have TONS of retro stuff around their house (in fact she is garage sale hawk). So being that the event was at The Fun House and skaters like BEER (especially Marginal Way supporters)! I thought that this image of this little guy sleeping in a corner would be a great way to start the poster out on the right foot.

I don't have a printer at home right now (really funny, thanks Kinko’s in Ballard) and finding a drunken skater for reference for my illustration could be hard to come by (well...maybe I could have just went down to Marginal to find one of our friends asleep, but this was late at night after my 9-5 contracting hours). Anyways, I like digit cams for this stuff. Set up a few bottles and the aid of my lady to snap a photo.... I was my own model for this illustration.

Tombo markers (my fav pens right now), tracing paper, and a light table.

What is Club Mouse Crippler? CMC is my outlet for me to share my process, thoughts, and/or news about what going with me, Shawn Bishop. Allot of times you see things that people create that look good and tasty all polished up and neat. I like to see the process that someone goes through to get to the final result, hopeful CMC will get down to it and share my brain waves with people that want to see how I might have gotten from A to B.
